Earbuds Guide

Different Types of Earbuds Explained (In-Ear, Open-Ear, ANC & More)

Not all "earbuds" are the same shape or design. Before comparing specific models, it helps to know which category actually fits your use case — this guide explains the main types you will encounter while browsing our catalog.

Sealed in-ear (the most common type)

These use silicone or foam tips that seal the ear canal, improving passive noise isolation and bass response. Most flagship wireless earbuds today are this type.

Open-ear and bone/air conduction

These sit outside or above the ear canal instead of sealing it, trading isolation for situational awareness — see our dedicated open-ear guide for models.

ANC vs non-ANC

Active Noise Cancelling earbuds use microphones to actively cancel background noise, on top of whatever passive isolation the ear tips provide. Non-ANC models rely on passive isolation alone.

Wireless-charging cases

Some cases support wireless (Qi) charging in addition to USB-C, letting you top up without a cable — a convenience feature independent of the earbud type itself.
