Most current Beats earbuds are sweat and water resistant (IPX4), but not waterproof — and Beats Solo 3 has no water resistance rating at all. Here's the breakdown by model.
Are Beats Waterproof? The Real Answer by Model
The short answer: no Beats product is waterproof, but most of the current true wireless and workout-focused models are water and sweat resistant. The exact rating depends heavily on which specific Beats model you own — and one popular model has no water resistance rating at all.
✅ Models with an official IPX4 rating (sweat and splash resistant)
According to Apple's own support documentation, the following Beats models are rated IPX4 (resistant to sweat and water splashes from any direction, tested under IEC standard 60529):
Powerbeats
Beats Studio Buds / Beats Studio Buds+
Beats Solo Buds
Beats Fit Pro
Powerbeats Fit (case included)
Important nuance: even for these models, the charging case itself is not water or sweat resistant — only the earbuds are rated IPX4.
❌ Beats Solo 3: no water resistance rating at all
The Beats Solo 3 — an on-ear (not in-ear) wireless headphone — has no official IP rating whatsoever. Apple does not advertise any specific water or sweat resistance for this model, and any water or moisture damage isn't covered under warranty. If you're looking for workout-safe Beats, Solo 3 is not the model to pick.
🏊 What IPX4 actually protects against (and doesn't)
What it covers: Splashing water from any direction — think sweat during a workout or getting caught in light rain.
What it doesn't cover: Full submersion, showering, or swimming. IPX4 is meaningfully lower than the IPX7 rating (protection against temporary submersion up to about 1 meter) that some competing "waterproof" earbuds carry.
🏃 Bottom line by use case
Gym, running, general workouts: Any IPX4-rated Beats model (Powerbeats, Studio Buds, Fit Pro, Solo Buds) will handle sweat and light rain fine.
Swimming or water sports: No current Beats model is rated for this — look elsewhere if that's your specific need.
Everyday commuting or office use with Beats Solo 3: Keep them away from rain and heavy moisture entirely, since there's no rated protection at all.
Water resistance ratings degrade over time and aren't guaranteed for the life of the product — even an IPX4-rated pair is more vulnerable to moisture damage as seals age, so treat the rating as a safety margin rather than a permanent guarantee.
