AirPods were announced in September 2016 but didn't actually ship until December that year — here's the real timeline, plus a brief look at what came before them.
📅 The key dates
September 7, 2016: Apple announced the original AirPods at a special event in San Francisco, alongside the iPhone 7 — the same event where Apple removed the headphone jack from its iPhones.
Originally promised for "late October" 2016: Apple's initial timeline for shipping AirPods slipped.
December 13, 2016: AirPods actually became available to order, arriving just in time for holiday shopping season. In-store availability at Apple retail locations followed on December 20, 2016.
So while AirPods are strongly associated with 2016, there's a real 3-month gap between the September announcement and the December release that's easy to gloss over.
🧪 AirPods weren't developed overnight
Apple's public unveiling in 2016 was the end of a much longer development process — the first known patent filing related to what would become AirPods dates back to March 2011, five years before the product actually launched.
🎧 What came before AirPods
AirPods weren't the first true wireless (fully cable-free) earbuds on the market — smaller manufacturers had experimented with the format earlier — but they're widely credited with making the format mainstream. Apple's own earlier product, the wired EarPods (note the different name), had already established the general shape and fit that AirPods carried over into a wireless, cable-free design.
📈 Later AirPods generations, for reference
AirPods (2nd generation): released March 2019
AirPods Pro (1st generation): released October 2019, adding ANC and silicone ear tips
AirPods Max: released December 2020, Apple's first over-ear headphones
AirPods (3rd generation): released October 2021
AirPods Pro (2nd generation): released September 2022
AirPods 4: released September 2024
If you're trying to identify which AirPods generation you specifically own, checking the model number on the charging case (or the exact device name in your phone's Bluetooth settings) is the most reliable way, since visually similar generations can have meaningfully different features.
